Become A More Effective Couples Therapist...

Learn how to practice one of the most effective approaches to couples therapy.

The Complexities of Couple Therapy

Clinical supervision for couples therapists may be what you need if the complexities of doing couple therapy leave you bemused. As a couples therapist, do you sometimes feel like you are standing on the freeway with two trucks trying to run you over?

That is how Sue Johnson described the experience of doing couple therapy, before she developed the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) model of couples therapy. EFT is uniquely based on attachment theory as a description of adult romantic love and is highly effective.

Clinical supervision for couples therapists recognizes that working with couples can be a very difficult experience for therapists. In many ways, it is more complex than either individual or family therapy because of the highly charged emotions of two individuals in an intimate relationship. Perhaps you notice that you are putting in excessive energy trying to help couples make changes, only to find them slipping back into old patterns time and time again.

If you are finding couples therapy to be highly onerous and frustrating, why not enlist some help from a couples therapist supervisor with training and experience in a clinically proven effective model of couple therapy?

I can offer you clinical supervision as a couples therapist that is sure to bring encouragement and empowerment to your clinical work.

Self-of-the-Therapist Issues

As a couples therapist, do you find that you are getting “hooked’ with particular types of individuals or couples?

Working with two individuals in a distressed relationship can trigger intense emotional reactions inside a couples therapist. Intimate relationships are a strong force for disturbing a therapist’s interpersonal and intrapsychic issues and insecurities.

Couples in despair, can evoke despair, frustration and unmet attachment needs for safety and security within a couples therapist. Clinical supervision or consultation can be of great help in assisting you to separate your own personal issues from those of your clients.

Types of Clinical Supervision

Individual or group supervision:

Couples therapy supervision can be done individually or in a group format. Individual supervision has the benefit of focusing entirely on your own couples therapy work, while group supervision facilitates learning from and being encouraged by your colleagues.

In Person Supervision:

I will meet with you in person in Winnipeg, Manitoba to provide feedback to you based on your video and audio recordings, case presentations or role-playing. I will also provide live supervision to you during your couple therapy sessions.

Distance Supervision Via Phone and Email

I provide supervision to couples therapists in distant locations by email or telephone. You can send me audio or video recordings of couples therapy sessions by mail or through the internet via secure file share programs such as Pando.

My Philosophy of Supervision

In providing clinical supervision for couples therapists, I use an integrative model, influenced most strongly by the process-experiential therapy known as Emotionally Focused or Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). I do not restrict myself to supervising therapists who use EFT, however. In the beginning stages of our working relationship, we will clearly discuss your expectations and goals and the compatibility of our philosophical and theoretical orientations. I view supervision as a process for increasing your techniques and skills and for enhancing your flexibility in the “use of self” in therapy with clients.
