Types of Therapy Services

I meet with individuals, couples and families from a wide range of cultural and sexual orientations who are experiencing relationship-related problems. I work with a broad diversity of troubled relationships. I also work with therapists as a supervisor, consultant and trainer.

When you contact me to discuss counselling, I will encourage you to invite the people you experience to be part of your current struggle to come with you for counselling. However, this is not always possible or you may feel that you need to begin therapy by yourself. We will find what fits your needs and goals and is within your comfort level.

Individual Counselling

We can work together to resolve the pain and grief resulting from broken relationships or current relationships that are having difficulties.Individual Counselling for Relationship Problems

There are times that counselling is best done by yourself: Sometimes the person that you experience as the core of your problem has died or left you or is not able or willing to come to therapy with you. We can work together to resolve the pain and grief resulting from broken relationships or current relationships that are having difficulties. You can find a new lease on life again in spite of your enormous pain and loss!

For examples of how I work with relationship concerns when only one person is in the therapy room, see the case examples in my paper published in 2006 in Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.

Individual Counselling for Other Problems

In addition to working with people who are having relationship problems, I have helped hundreds of people to triumph over adversity in their lives. I have successfully provided counselling to people who have experienced issues of depression, anxiety, loss, grief, stresses of change and turmoil of family and work-related changes and traumas. Many people have replaced negative ways of dealing with difficult circumstances with life-giving alternatives. They have rediscovered how to tap into the source of growth and love with which they had lost contact. And you can too!

Therapy for Relationship Problems

Individual Therapy for Relationship Problems

Ideally it is best that you attend therapy with your partner present because in most instances that is the best way towards making the changes you desire. However, there may be some situations where it is best for you to come to therapy by yourself. For example, your partner may be unwilling or unable to attend with you, or you may be reluctant to invite him or her. I will help you to explore your willingness to invite your partner.

Whether or not your relationship partner attends counselling with you, I can help you to make substantial improvements in how you deal with the problems that you are experiencing.

Couples Therapy for Relationship Problems

If both you and your partner are willing to attend therapy, we will begin by meeting together. After the initial 1-3 therapy sessions, I will have one individual therapy session with each of you. Following that, we will meet together as a couple for approximately 12-20 sessions. We meet for 60-90 minutes, depending on schedules, you needs and your financial resources.

Family Therapy For Family Concerns

Family Therapy For Family ConcernsFamily concerns range from parenting concerns to conflicts with adult parents and siblings. When you are experiencing family difficulties, I will invite you to attend therapy together as a family, and also in separate smaller family units (eg. husband and wife, mother and daughter, etc). I will ask parents and parent figures to have some counselling sessions with me on your own, and will also meet with the children, adolescents or teens separately without the parent(s) as needed for success to occur. Similarly, when your family conflicts involve adult children and parents, I will invite you to come in as a group and also in smaller units.

Some benefits of family counselling:

  • Family Counselling Helps Create a Solid and Secure Parenting Base
I have helped many parents find a way to become a solid team, so they can provide a safe and secure base from which their children and teenagers can be launched into adulthood.
  • Family Therapy Helps You Cope with Aging Parents
Do you find that just as you expected to be an adult free to live your own life that suddenly you are resenting one or both of your parents’ needs and requests that seem to be taking over your entire free time? Are you caught in parenting your parents, jumping to their demands years after you expected this would stop? I can help you navigate the course of disentangling from your parents, while still providing support to them, and without needing to cut them out of your life completely.
  • Family Therapy Helps Resolve Tensions Between Adult Siblings
Although you can’t change your parents or your siblings, you can make positive changes! I have helped hundreds of people disentangle from family injuries. You can make changes within yourself to be free and happy with a new way of relating to your parents or your siblings.

Telephone Counselling or Webcam Therapy Sessions

After we have begun to work together, we may find that having telephone therapy or webcam therapy sessions will be the best way to continue our work together. Or, perhaps you require a therapy session while I am traveling away from my Winnipeg office. Or maybe your needs for child care or travel can best be accommodated via distance counselling.

Perhaps you are wanting high quality couple therapy in the clinically proven most effective form of couple therapy (Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy) and it is not available to you locally. Perhaps you require a therapy session during a time that I am out of your locale. . Webcam therapy may be the perfect solution for you! It has been the solution for others!

Distance need not be a barrier to you getting effective couples or individual therapy!

I have provided telephone counselling and conducted webcam therapy for a number of years. It has proven to be very effective for both individual and couple therapy, when circumstances made it difficult to meet in person. You will most likely find that I can tune into your experience in spite of the distance.

Distance sessions (telephone counselling or webcam therapy) are scheduled in advance and are prepaid.

Clinical Supervision for Therapists

If you are finding couples therapy to be highly onerous and frustrating, why not enlist some help from a couples therapist supervisor with training and experience in a clinically proven effective model of couple therapy? If you are seeking to rejuvenate your practice and attract more clients, I can provide you with quality supervision that will make a difference. See Clinical Supervision For Couples Therapists.
